National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp) announced the
start of the whale shark season (Rhincodon typus) in the Peninsula of
Quintana Roo, east of Isla Contoy and Isla Mujeres.
The organism recalled the privilege that represents for this country to have the presence of this species, which travels up to 13 thousand kilometers to arrive at our beaches, where it intensifies its presence between July and August.
He explained that the whale shark is considered the largest fish on the planet, with a length of up to 12 meters and a weight of 21 tons, and whose harmless nature allows observing activities around it.He added that other Natural Protected Areas, in which you can carry out activities of sighting of this species, are in the Peninsula of Baja California, in Bay of Los Angeles and Bahia de la Paz, and the Coast of Nayarit, in San Blas, Boca. of Camichín.
This marine species is internationally cataloged as vulnerable within the Red List of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN, for its acronym in English).At the national level it is a species included in NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010, considered as threatened.
Among the main threats to the whale shark are incidental capture in fisheries that use drift and longline nets and inadequate practices of observation and swimming.In order to appreciate and enjoy the visit of this specimen without damaging it, the authorities prohibit activities that include the use of drones, fishing, water skiing, parachute and jet-sky, among others.
It is also prohibited to harass or harm the animals in any way, to drink alcohol or to consume toxic substances before and during the tour; mount the fish, touch their caudal fins and restrict their normal movement; It is suggested to keep a distance of five meters and not take photos with flash.
